The November 30 issue of the Liyang Times featured a special report titled “Turbovap: A ‘Tenacious Craftsman’ on the Path of Innovation,” highlighting the company’s achievements in scientific and technological innovation.

(Tao Yingjie) Ten years ago, unable to tolerate the arrogance of foreign suppliers, their exorbitant prices, and unreliable after-sales service, a bioengineering company in Liyang turned to independently developing MVR (mechanical vapor recompression) equipment. After a decade of painstaking effort, the company not only pioneered the development of China’s first centrifugal steam compressor but also achieved performance and stability that fully rival comparable imported systems, setting a successful precedent for cross-industry growth.

Jiangsu Vido Co., Ltd. was established in January 2002 and is a specialized manufacturer of food ingredients, integrating research and development, production, sales, and technical support. In 2006, in order to reduce its energy consumption, the company decided to install an MVR unit to address issues such as excessive energy use and high environmental protection costs. However, at that time, there were very few manufacturers worldwide capable of producing such equipment. After engaging with foreign suppliers, the company abandoned the plan due to the vendors’ arrogant attitudes, exorbitant prices, and unreliable after-sales service. Nevertheless, why couldn’t Chinese companies develop this type of energy‑saving, environmentally friendly equipment—widely used in industries like chemicals and pharmaceuticals?

Luochunlong, Chairman of Jiangsu Vido Co., Ltd., guided the company’s team in embarking on a new frontier—MVR technology—driven by his conviction that technological innovation should serve the nation. Yet, transitioning from the biotechnology sector to the mechanical engineering field—a leap of such magnitude—is a challenge most entrepreneurs would hesitate to undertake. To pioneer the development of China’s first MVR‑based equipment, Luochunlong poured tremendous effort into the endeavor. In 2006, he assembled a technical team and initiated collaborative research with several prestigious domestic universities to develop a centrifugal steam compressor. By 2008, he established Turbovap Co., Ltd.; however, after two years, the technology remained in the R&D phase. Under mounting pressure and amid widespread skepticism, Luochunlong relied on the robust support of Jiangsu Vido to lead his team in overcoming adversity and defying prevailing doubts. After five years of dedicated research, in 2011, they finally succeeded in developing China’s first centrifugal steam compressor.

The launch of the first product failed to win much attention from domestic customers, as no one dared to be the first to take the plunge. How to bring this newly developed product to market thus became a major challenge for the company. In terms of marketing strategy, Turbovap adopted a bold innovation, introducing a “try‑before‑you‑pay” approach. In November 2011, Turbovap’s centrifugal steam compressor was successfully deployed at Qingdao Mingyue Algae Group, delivering energy savings of over 70% compared with the conventional three‑effect evaporators previously in use. Within a short time, positive feedback poured in: within less than six months, the customer placed a second order, and Turbovap’s equipment began saving the company RMB 20,000 per day. As word spread, companies across the domestic industry quickly took notice, with numerous clients—including Shanghai Baosteel, Sanjiu Pharmaceutical, Baogang Rare Earth, and Lizhu Pharmaceutical—placing orders one after another.

Today, Turbovap has evolved from a leading domestic manufacturer of centrifugal steam compressors to a successful provider of MVR multi‑effect retrofit solutions. It offers customers end‑to‑end, turnkey projects—covering everything from experimental data collection and product design to installation, commissioning, training, and after‑sales service. Its products are applied across a wide range of industries, including traditional Chinese medicine concentration, sugar‑alcohol concentration, fruit‑juice concentration, seawater desalination, leachate treatment, high‑salinity wastewater treatment, pharmaceutical wastewater treatment, chemical wastewater treatment, and oilfield wastewater treatment. In terms of intellectual property protection, Turbovap has filed 14 patent applications, including 3 invention patents and 1 software copyright. Throughout its production and operations, the company has steadily refined its IP management system, safeguarding its proprietary rights, preventing the misappropriation of R&D成果, and enabling it to maintain a competitive edge by securing strong patent positions in an increasingly fierce market.

“To accomplish something, one must focus on doing it well and with precision, allowing things to unfold naturally and reach fruition in their own time.” As the founder of Jiangsu Weiduo and Turbovaps, Luo Chunlong has long held this principle as his guiding motto. In 2016, Turbovaps’ cumulative order value approached RMB 200 million, a 50% increase over the same period last year. While generating significant economic value for the company, it has also helped customers achieve truly low‑emission industrial wastewater treatment, making a substantial contribution to the nation’s energy‑saving and emission‑reduction efforts.
